The Labor Market Condition of Immigrants in Italy

Lombardy, a city in italy, is a region where about a quarter of all foreign population of italy lives.
In the past decades the number of immigrants to italy grew a lot, and finding work is one of  the most important factors for the sucessfull integration of immigrants.
But the rate of unemployed immigrants is still high and the situation on the italien labour market is difficult for them.

“Whoever has a job may enter the country; more precisely, a job that we do not want to do”, is said in the article „The Labor Market Condition of Immigrants in Italy: The case of Lombardy“ - and that is the problem.
Italy needs the immigrants to satisfy their labour needs and the immigrants are willing to do work that the locals refuse to do.
In Lombardy they are employed in agriculture, hotels and restaurants, construction sector or in the private household sector,  in low-skilled, low-paid elementary occupations for which they are often overqualified. Most of the immigrants  do not have the possibility to use many of their qualifications, because of the mismatch between their qualifications and the job they do.
More than 80% of men work in jobs which are below their level of education. The same problem for women:  16% of domestic care workers and 11% of domestic cleaners and helpers have university degrees.
Activity and employment rates for recent immigrants are lower than those for longer established migrants. Means those who stay longer, are four times less likely to be unemployed and ten times more likely to be self – employed.
For immigrants in italy it is hard to gain ground on the italian labour market.
